Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the Paschal Triduum, a three-day period dedicated to the celebration of the Paschal mystery, which includes the Passion, Crucifixion, Death, burial, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The name Maundy Thursday come from the first antiphon sung in the ceremony of foot washing, "Mandatum Novum" (Jn. 13:34), meaning New Commandment, reflecting Jesus' words, "A new commandment I give to you." This day is a commemoration of the institution of the Lord's Supper, and the traditional day for the Blessing of the Holy Oils. This Feast is usually followed by the stripping of the altar, as we remember Jesus' arrest and the beginning of his trial.
